Tīrthas of Kāśī

Kāśī (Vārāṇasī), the city of Bhagavān Śiva, holds a great many tīrthas and liṅgas within its bounds. The pages below describe them one by one, mostly from the Kāśī Khaṇḍa of the Skanda Purāṇa.

Bindumādhava

Bindumādhava is the form of Bhagavān Vishṇu at Pañcanada Tīrtha in Kāśī, beside Maṇikarṇikā, where he chose to stay in preference to Vaikuṇṭha.

Daśāśvamedha Ghāṭa

Daśāśvamedha Ghāṭa is one of the five supreme tīrthas of Kāśī, on the bank of the Gaṅgā, named for the ten Aśvamedha yajñas of King Dīvodāsa.

Jñānavāpī

Jñānavāpī, the Well of Knowledge, is a sacred tīrtha in Kāśī that Īśāna dug with his trident to bathe the self-manifested Liṅga of Viśveśvara.

Jyeshṭhasthāna

Jyeshṭhasthāna is a sacred precinct of Kāśī around the self-manifested Jyeshṭheśvara Liṅga, where Bhagavān Śiva met the ṛshi Jaigīshavya.

Kapālamocana Tīrtha (Kāśī)

Kapālamocana Tīrtha in Vārāṇasī is where Brahmā's skull fell from Bhagavān Śiva's hand and freed him from brahmahatyā.

Kāśī

Kāśī, also called Vārāṇasī, is the Avimukta-kshetra on the Gaṅgā in Uttar Pradesh, the city of Bhagavān Viśvanātha, where death gives moksha.

Kedāra in Kāśī

Kedāreśvara in Kāśī is a rough mound-shaped Liṅga with seven times the puṇya of Kedāra in the Himālaya, set up there after Vasishṭha's devotion.

Kṛttivāseśvara

Kṛttivāseśvara is a very ancient and supreme Liṅga of Kāśī, which arose from the body of the asura Gajāsura and is called the head of all Liṅgas.

Maṇikarṇikā

Maṇikarṇikā is the most sacred tīrtha in the Avimukta kshetra of Kāśī, named for the gem earring of Bhagavān Śiva that fell into Cakrapushkariṇī.

Omkāreśvara in Kāśī

Omkāreśvara is the first of the fourteen supreme Liṅgas of Kāśī, on the north bank of Matsyodarī, where Brahmā saw the five parts of Praṇava as five Liṅgas.

Piśācamocana

Piśācamocana is a tīrtha and Liṅga place in Kāśī, north of Pitṛīśa, named for the freeing of a piśāca through a bath in Vimalodaka.

Ratneśvara

Ratneśvara is a self-born Liṅga in Kāśī, north of Kālabhairava, formed from the heap of jewels that Himavān left there for his daughter Pārvatī.
