Suguṇā Dāsī
Suguṇā was a dāsī (attendant) in the household of Bhagavān Rāma. She appears in Chapter 21 of the Rājya Khaṇḍa of the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa. She caught the dripping tāmbūla juice with her cupped hands while Rāma was being offered tāmbūla (a betel preparation). Rāma was moved and offered her a vara (boon). She asked only to stay near him in a future life, and Rāma granted that she would be born as Rādhā in the Kṛshṇa avatāra.
The act of devotion
Suguṇā was serving in Rāma’s court. Rāma was being offered tāmbūla. Some of the tāmbūla rasa, the fragrant, reddish liquid, began to drip and fall. Suguṇā cupped her hands below it without thinking. She did not want even one drop of something touched by Rāma to fall carelessly on the ground. No one had told her to do it, and she did not expect anything in return. It came from her natural devotion.
Rāma saw this and was touched. He asked Suguṇā what vara she wished for.
The vara
Suguṇā’s request was very tender. She did not ask for mukti (liberation). She did not ask for the pleasures of svarga (heaven), or for any worldly gift. She asked only to remain close to Rāma, and to be with him in a future birth as well. Rāma knew this single wish came from the purity of her spontaneous act. He recognised it as the highest form of bhakti (loving devotion).
Rāma granted her the vara. She would be born as Rādhā in the time of the Kṛshṇa avatāra. Rādhā is the beloved of Bhagavān Kṛshṇa and the embodiment of divine love (premā), the very object (ālambana) of the highest state of bhakti. In this way the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa shows that Rādhā’s origin lies in this moment of selfless service in Rāma’s own household.
