Ramaṇaka Varsha

Ramaṇaka Varsha is one of the varshas of Jambū Dvīpa. It lies between the Śveta and Nishadha mountains. In the Bhīshma Parva of the Mahābhārata, Sañjaya describes it as a land of lasting contentment. Its people are of noble families, always joyful and without enemies, and they live eleven thousand five hundred years.

Location

Ramaṇaka Varsha lies between the Śveta mountain and the Nishadha mountain, in the line of varshas between Meru and the northern regions. Sañjaya describes it together with Hiraṇmaya Varsha in Chapter 8.

The people of Ramaṇaka

Sañjaya describes the people of Ramaṇaka Varsha as a people of inner peace:

  • All belong to excellent families (uttama kulas).
  • Their looks are naturally pleasing.
  • They have no enemies (śatruvulu lēru).
  • They are always in a state of prasanna citta (a serene, contented and happy mind).
  • Their lifespan is eleven thousand five hundred years.
