Bhāgavata Mahā Purāṇa – Second Skanda

The Bhāgavata Mahā Purāṇa is described in its own opening verses as the ripened fruit of the Vedic kalpa-vṛkṣa — the wish-fulfilling tree of the Vedas — which fell to earth through the mouth of Śuka Maharṣi, sweet as a parrot-bitten fruit. It is said to contain the sāra (essence) of all the Vedas, the Rāmāyaṇa, and the Mahābhārata. Unlike other Purāṇas that address a variety of topics including dharma, artha, and kāma, the Bhāgavatam proclaims from its very first verse that it teaches only the highest dharma — one that is free from the desire for fruit and that delivers beings directly to Bhagavān Kṛshṇa.

The text consists of twelve skandhas (books) containing approximately eighteen thousand ślokas. The first skanda establishes the framing narrative, introduces the principal characters, and traces events from the Mahābhārata war to the coronation of Parīkṣit and his encounter with Kali.

The text declares: “Kṛshṇas tu bhagavān svayam” — Kṛshṇa is not a partial avatāra but Bhagavān himself. (source: Bhāgavata Mahā Purāṇa, 1st Skanda, Chapter 3)

Structure of the Second Skanda

The second skanda is primarily a Brahma-Nārada saṃvāda — Brahma teaching Nārada at the beginning of the current creation — along with a Parīkṣit-Śuka frame. Its ten chapters cover cosmology, yoga, and the establishment of the Bhāgavata’s transmission chain.
