Sumanyu

Sumanyu was a king. The Mahābhārata remembers him for a very large gift of food to the ṛṣi Śāṇḍilya. Because of this gift he gained a permanent home in svarga (heaven).

The gift of food to Śāṇḍilya

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma lists kings who reached svarga through dāna (giving). Sumanyu is remembered there for a gift on a huge scale. He gave the ṛṣi Śāṇḍilya heaps of bhakṣya (delicacies, things to eat) and bhojya (staple foods) as high as mountains. Through this act he gained a sthira-vāsa, a permanent dwelling, in svarga. (Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 137)
