Nīla
Nīla is a great vānara (forest-dwelling warrior of the monkey people) and a commander. He was born from the aṃśa (a part) of Agni, the deva of fire. He was one of the most powerful commanders in the army of Sugrīva. He was known for his blazing energy, which he received from the divine fire.
Divine origin
The seventeenth chapter of the Bāla Kāṇḍa tells how the vānara army came to be. Brahmā commanded the devas to bring forth vānara warriors to serve Bhagavān Rāma in his mission. Nīla was born from the aṃśa of Agni, the deva of fire and the divine witness of all yajñas (fire rituals).
Nīla received the radiance, energy and valour of Agni. He became one of the fiercest commanders in Sugrīva’s army. Because of his fire heritage, he fought with exceptional brilliance in battle.
