Choosing How to Read

Vishṇu Purana is offered in up to three reading formats per language:

  1. A literal prose translation for every Śloka, but excludes the Ślokas
  2. A version with the original Ślokas alongside the translation, and
  3. A simplified vachanam retelling.

Each serves a different kind of reader, from daily pārāyaṇa to scholarly study to a first introduction to the text.

Where to Start Reading

Vishṇu Purana’s six Aṃśas move from cosmology and creation through geography, dharma, royal dynasties, the life of Kṛṣṇa, and finally liberation. If you’re reading for the first time:

  • New to the text? Start from Aṃśa 1 for the cosmological foundation the rest of the Purana builds on.
  • Interested primarily in Kṛṣṇa’s life? You can begin directly at Aṃśa 5 (Kṛṣṇa Carita) — it stands reasonably well on its own.
  • Reading for daily recitation (pārāyaṇa)? The Phala Śruti section is traditionally read on completion, describing the benefits of reciting the Purana.

  • Vishṇu – The central deity of the Purana’s cosmology and narrative
