Summary of chapter 198 of the Agni Purāṇa is as follows:
Monthly vratas extending over one or more months are described. The Āṣāḍhādi-cāturmāsya (four-month discipline from Āṣāḍha) prescribes abstention from oil-bath (abhyaṅga). Vaiśākha-month purity with abstention from flowers and salt combined with go-dāna yields rājya-phala. The Bhīma-vrata of one complete month's upavāsa followed by go-dāna leads to Viṣṇu-sāyujya. Prātaḥ-snāna daily during the four months from Āṣāḍha rewards the performer with Viṣṇu-loka. The Guḍa-vrata performed on tṛtīyā in Māgha or Caitra with a guḍa-dhenu (jaggery-cow) gift transforms the giver into a Śiva-svarūpa. The Cāturmāsya-vrata procedure is given: beginning on Āṣāḍha-śukla-ekādaśī with a prayer invoking Janārdana's grace to complete the vrata even in the event of the performer's death.
