Kalāvatī, Wife of Svaroci
Kalāvatī is a girl with a magical connection to the moon who survived great sadness to become a queen and the mother of a Manu.
A Lonely Start on the High Mountain
Kalāvatī was born on a great mountain to a famous brahmarṣi named Pāru and a celestial apsaras named Puñjikasthalā. Shortly after she was born, her mother left her all alone in a dangerous forest filled with wild animals. Luckily, a kind gandharva found her and took her home to raise her as his own daughter.
The Girl Who Grew Like the Moon
As she grew up, the gandharva noticed something very special about her. Every day during the time when the moon gets bigger, which is called śukla pakṣa, Kalāvatī grew stronger and more beautiful just like the moon’s light. However, unlike the moon which gets smaller during kṛṣṇa pakṣa, she never lost her strength or beauty. Because of this magical link to the moon’s phases, her foster father named her Kalāvatī.
Loss and a Meeting with Satīdevī
Her peaceful life was interrupted when a rākṣasa demanded to marry her. When her foster father refused, the rākṣasa killed him while he was sleeping. Deeply sad and alone, Kalāvatī wanted to leave this world, but the goddess Satīdevī appeared to stop her. Satīdevī promised her that she would eventually marry a great man named Svaroci and that their son would grow up to be a Manu. To help her, the goddess gave her a special power called Padminī vidyā, which allowed her to control eight magical treasures known as nidhis.
A New Beginning with Svaroci
Before she could meet her future husband, Kalāvatī was struck by a terrible disease called kṣaya-roga (Tuberculosis) because of a curse from a muni. She spent a long time suffering until Svaroci finally arrived and used his knowledge of Āyurveda to cure her completely. After she was healthy again, Kalāvatī married Svaroci and shared her magical treasures and powers with him. They lived together on the mountain, and she eventually gave birth to a brave son named Prabhāva.
